About Imajes

One subject, held to properly: how the files that carry pictures, sound, video and documents actually work, and what it takes to publish them.

What this publication covers

Imajes writes about media technology from the point of view of the person holding the file. Which format to save in, what a codec threw away, why a screenshot went soft, what a loudness meter is measuring, which archive format will still open in ten years, and what a backup does and does not protect. The subjects are chosen because people ask them over and over and the answers online are thin.

How an article gets written

Every piece starts from a question with a real search behind it. Facts, version numbers and specification details come from primary sources — the format specifications, the standards bodies, vendor documentation — and where a number depends on settings or hardware we give the range and the rule that produces it rather than inventing a single figure. Where we could not confirm something, we say so instead of rounding it off.

What we do not do

We sell nothing. We do not rank products by brand, run affiliate storefronts, or publish benchmark numbers we did not take from a named source. We are not a laboratory and we do not pretend to be one.

The archive

This domain is older than the publication. From 2003 to 2006 it carried a personal weblog about code, the web and the people building it, and those pages are still here at their original addresses — see the archive. They are somebody else’s writing from twenty years ago, kept intact rather than tidied away, and marked as such on every page.

Placements

Some pages on this domain are commissioned articles placed by third parties, and a strip of partner links appears on the front page. Those pages are labelled. They are not written or edited by this publication, and nothing in the editorial sections is sold. If you want to place something, write to us — see contact.

A note on the name

Imajes is the name of the domain and nothing more. This publication is independent and is not connected with any company, product or person that happens to share the name.
