Why Does My 1 TB Drive Show 931 GB?

A 1 TB hard drive labels 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. But check the File Explorer in Windows, or Disk Utility on a Mac, and instead of 1000 GB, the operating system reports the available space as around 931 GB.

"My 1 TB drive has 931 GB—I'm 69 GB short already!"

Not so fast. Your 1 TB drive is.1 TB. On the box, 1 TB means 1,000,000,000,000 bytes in the decimal number system. But File Explorer and Finder divide that number by 1,073,741,824, which is 1,024 times 1,024 times 1,024 — a binary size called 1 TiB. When you do the math, 1,000,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 931.32 GB. Same bytes, different divisor.

How Capacity Conversions Work

The 1 TB is indeed 1,000,000,000,000 bytes 1 on the drive label. That's from the decimal number system that we count things in every other day. In byte names, 1 KB is 1,000 bytes, 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes, 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, and 1,000 GB make 1 TB. In the computer world, a system of prefix names dead-ends after 1 KiB. 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes, 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824, and 1,024 GB — 1,099,511,627,776 bytes — make 1 TiB. Those 1,024 instead of 1,000 multipliers are a leftover from when computers counted bytes in base 1024 at the hardware level.

To find out how much space you really have, label-makers subtract the binary prefixes, but hearers of the label announcement keep the decimal prefixes. Then they multiply the decimal-numbered TB by 900,000 MB in a decimal way, and the 1024^x path just keeps going. When you buy a 1 TB drive, you have 900,000 MB in the decimal multiplier, but 1,048,576 KB and 1,073,741,824 GB from the 1024 multiplier. Each GB is 1,048,576 bytes larger than decimal GB.

How Filesystems Divide the Numbers Up Again

Finally, useful space gets reduced a second time by the filesystem that uses the drive, which needs a buffer for file allocation tables, journaling and fragmentation guards, boxes of data overhead that sit between the drive's raw bytes and the files you actually see.

Seagate’s explanation includes the formula "Decimal capacity / 1,073,741,824 = Binary GB capacity." DiskMop says both NTFS and ext4 deduplicate some space, but discards the rest. One published calculator article states that 1 TB formatted as NTFS yields 919.21 GiB usable after 1.3% overhead and 0% reserved space11.

That means whether your drive has 1 TB or achieves the 1.000 TiB label on the box, it can't fit a copy of every single file from an external drive with 1.000 GB of photos, or serve 1,000 1,000-movie playlists all at once; one needs a little extra, because the drive only fits about 900,000 950-movie playlists.

How Much Usable Space You Really Have

For a drive marked 1.000 TB, it's really 1,000,000 MB on exploration, 931.32 GiB on the outside pack. APFS, NTFS, or ext4 filesystems exert a little more fragmentation than the unformatted drive, consuming about 90 GiB as file ownership. That leaves about 931 GB, or 919 GiB. Why Your 1 TB Isn't Shown as 1 TB

Your 1 Terabyte hard drive is actually 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, 900,000 Megabytes, 1,000 Gigabytes. In short, a 1 TB drive is 1000 GB and 900 GiB.

When you format the drive with Ext4, NTFS, or APFS to truly use it, it eats 1.3-10% of your space. That makes the 900.000 GiB called out on the box really 931.32 GiB when formatted, so you're looking at 919.21 GiB.
