Why journalism is no longer safe

Yet another journalist has been jailed for refusing to reveal their sources by a federal judge in the U.S. Whilst in general I don't believe that the freedoms afforded by the first amendment are used wisely: often it's used for ill gain, usually to exhort influence and pressure over a target. However, in cases of reasonable and balanced news items all rights governed by the first amendment should be provided and under no circumstances should those be prevented or hindered by political, legal or other influence.
